Before You Create a Website
This tutorial is to show the steps to follow before you create a website. I am writing the most essential parts to help you along the way. This guide is for beginners that know how to surf the web, but are not sure of the steps to follow when creating their own website. I will include some links to help you along the way.
- Get Your Domain Name
This is by far the most difficult part. A domain name is the name you want to give your website. A domain name has an annual fee. Getting a domain name does not give you a website; it is just a name that is registered to you for your website.
My suggestion to you is to find at least two or more names to use, and in the process of searching to have a list of names in the search categories. Remember you may have to use a different way of spelling and try to avoid underscores, hyphens, and numbers. I would also suggest your purchase your domain name through your web host, which I’m about to discuss.
- Chose a Web Host
A web host is a company with many computers that are on 24 hours a day 365 days a year. They will host your website for you so everyone in the world can see it. There are a lot of web host providers available, and you have to be careful. You do not want to have to change from one provider to another because information could become corrupt in the transfer.
I have taken the time to search for good web host providers, and if you select one of the ones on my page I will receive a small commission for it. My suggestions link.
There are many providers out there that may be a little less expensive, but they do not offer the security that you need, along with 24/7 customer support. Be very cautious and if you chose to go with a provider other than one I have selected be sure to do your research.
If you purchased a domain name through another provider, you will have to point that domain name to your web host. Your web host can tell you the steps to follow, and I will write another article on how to do it.
- Building Your Site
There are a few things that you need to have set up with your provider such as an FTP account with a password. You will also have a way to create a database which is the backbone of your site. Many web hosts provide simple programs to help you design your site, which is a great way to get a site started. Expect to make mistakes if you are new to web design. There is a lot that goes into it, from the foundation to the final project.
